Swimming in Italy

Italy's swim spots here are on its islands and its southern coast: Sardinia, Sicily and the smaller islands around them, and the Salento in Puglia. The sea stays warm into October, and many beaches mix free public stretches with lidos that rent sunbeds and umbrellas.

Questions about Italy

Can you swim in Italy in November?

Yes. The sea is typically 19 to 21 °C around Sicily in November and 17 to 19 °C around Sardinia, after 20 to 24 °C in October. The swimming season runs to November at most Sicilian beaches and at some in Sardinia, and at Mondello and Cefalù it starts in May.

Which beaches in Sicily have shallow water for children?

San Vito Lo Capo, where the comune recommends the shallow seabed for children. Cala Rossa on Favignana is rock only, and the regional tourist board rates it less suited to small children.

Which Sicilian beaches have wheelchair access?

San Vito Lo Capo has walkways across the sand for wheelchair users, and at Mondello the Italo Belga lido has boardwalks and wheelchair entry points into the water. San Vito's town centre is a limited traffic zone that needs a pass to drive in, and AST buses run there from Trapani.

What are the rules at Cala Rossa on Favignana?

You can swim, but spearfishing and taking marine life are banned: the inlet lies in zone C of the Egadi Islands marine protected area. Boats may anchor only outside the seabeds of environmental interest.

What is the water quality like in Italy?

In the 2025 EEA bathing season, 22 of the 24 places listed here with a monitoring site were classified excellent. Cefalù beach (Lungomare) and Mondello were classified good.
