Thermal baths in Switzerland
Switzerland's thermal water rises in the Alps and their valleys, in the Valais, Vaud, Graubünden and St. Gallen, and in the lowlands to the north: at Baden, where the Romans bathed, at Schinznach-Bad and Bad Zurzach on the Rhine, and at Yverdon-les-Bains on Lake Neuchâtel. Rheinfelden, also on the Rhine, bathes in brine from the nearby saltworks. Swimwear goes on in the thermal pools, and sauna areas, where there are any, are mostly textile-free.

Questions about Switzerland
Do you need to book Therme Vals?
Yes. Day visitors must book an entry slot online in advance. Phones and cameras are banned throughout, a towel is included, and your own towels and bathrobes aren't allowed.
Are the saunas at Swiss thermal baths nude?
Mostly, yes. The sauna areas at Tamina Therme, Leukerbad, Brigerbad, Bad Schinznach, sole uno in Rheinfelden and Mineralbad Andeer are textile-free, and so are Bernaqua's sauna landscape, which has a women-only section, and the sauna area at Bogn Engiadina. Therme Zurzach has both: textile saunas in the bath and textile-free saunas in its drill towers. Swimwear stays on everywhere at the Hürlimannbad in Zurich, at Mineralbad Samedan and in the sauna village at Saillon, and at Andeer the sauna is for women only on Monday evenings.
Can you take children to Swiss thermal baths?
Yes. Leukerbad welcomes children of all ages and has two slides, though toddlers need swim aids and swim diapers, and Yverdon-les-Bains takes babies from birth, though children up to 14 must come with an adult. Tamina Therme admits children from 3, sole uno and Lavey les Bains from 4 and Therme Vals from 6. Some baths limit the hours: the Hürlimannbad takes children up to 15 only from 09:00 to 17:00, Mineralbad Andeer is for adults only until 11:00, and the brine pool at Breiten admits children only in set morning and afternoon slots, never under 3 or still in diapers.
Where can you float in brine in Switzerland?
At sole uno in Rheinfelden, whose intensive brine pool holds 12 % salt at 36 °C, beside pools at about 3 %. The brine pool at Breiten above Mörel is 3 % salt at 33 °C, Bernaqua in Bern has two 4 per cent brine pools, Therme Zurzach has a cave-like brine float pool for over-16s and Bogn Engiadina in Scuol a 2 % brine pool.
Is the thermal bath in Yverdon-les-Bains open during the rebuilding?
Partly. The indoor building is closed for rebuilding until the end of 2027, but the two outdoor thermal pools stay open, at 35 °C and 33 °C in autumn and winter, with a temporary outdoor sauna, a heated yurt and temporary changing rooms. There is no hammam until then, and the operator advises baths of about 20 minutes.
How do you get to Swiss thermal baths by public transport?
For Leukerbad, take the train to Leuk and then the LLB bus. For Vals, the train goes to Ilanz and the PostBus on to the Therme stop. Tamina Therme has an hourly bus from Bad Ragaz station. Lavey is 10 to 15 minutes by PostBus from St-Maurice station, and the Hürlimannbad is 5 minutes on foot from Zürich Enge station. FORTYSEVEN is about 10 minutes on foot from Baden station, and Bogn Engiadina has its own bus stop in Scuol. The PostBus from Chur to Mesocco stops in front of Mineralbad Andeer, bus 604 runs from Yverdon-les-Bains station to the Les Bains stop, bus 86 from Rheinfelden station to the Parkresort, and Breiten is about 900 m on foot from Mörel station, on the line from Brig.
