Thermal baths in the Alps
Thermal baths across the Alps, from Uriage near Grenoble and Aix-les-Bains in the west to Villach and Bad Kleinkirchheim in Carinthia in the east, by way of Thonon-les-Bains on Lake Geneva, La Léchère in the Tarentaise, the Valais, the Aosta Valley, the Engadin, Bormio, Trentino, Merano, Bad Reichenhall and the Gastein valley. Spring water reaches the surface at 27 °C at Uriage, 30 °C at Vals, up to 51 °C at Leukerbad and 71 °C in the Chevalley borehole at Aix-les-Bains, while Saillon and Tauern Spa in Kaprun heat their pools. The saunas are textile-free in the Austrian baths, at Bad Reichenhall and Berchtesgaden and at Merano, though Das Ronacher also keeps a textile sauna; Bormio, Pré-Saint-Didier, Samedan, Le Monêtier, La Léchère and Aix-les-Bains want swimwear in every part of the bath.

Questions about the Alps
Are the saunas at Alpine thermal baths textile-free?
Mostly, yes. The sauna areas at both Gastein baths, AQUA DOME, Tauern Spa, the RupertusTherme in Bad Reichenhall, Terme Merano, Tamina Therme, Leukerbad, Bogn Engiadina in Scuol and Brigerbad are textile-free, and Lavey has a naturist area in its Nordic pavilion. Das Ronacher in Bad Kleinkirchheim keeps its sauna village textile-free apart from the Zirben sauna and brine steam bath off the indoor pool, where swimwear stays on. Swimwear is required throughout at Bormio's Bagni Vecchi, Samedan, Le Monêtier, Thermes Chevalley in Aix-les-Bains and the Spa Õ des Lauzes at La Léchère, and also in the Mayens du Bien-Être sauna village at Saillon and the spa at Ovronnaz. Thonon-les-Bains also requires a swimsuit and turns away swim shorts and board shorts, and the Spa Thermal d'Uriage asks you to bring one. The RupertusTherme's Staufinnensauna is for women only.
Can under-16s use the saunas at Alpine thermal baths?
Mostly not. Leukerbad, Lavey, Brigerbad, Ovronnaz, Saillon, Aix-les-Bains and the RupertusTherme open their sauna areas from 16, and so do both Gastein baths, except on family days: Family Sauna Sunday at the Alpentherme, from age 6 with a parent, and days such as Family Saturday at the Felsentherme. AQUA DOME, Tauern Spa and the sauna and hammam at Le Monêtier take guests from 15, Terme Merano and the Spa Õ des Lauzes at La Léchère from 14 and Tamina Therme in Bad Ragaz from 13. At Bogn Engiadina under-18s may use the sauna only at set times with an adult, and QC Terme Bagni Vecchi in Bormio admits nobody under 14 at all.
How warm are the pools at Alpine thermal baths?
Mostly in the mid-30s. Leukerbad's pools run at 35 to 36 °C, Tamina Therme's at a constant 36.5 °C and Brigerbad's thermal pools at 34 to 35 °C, while Merano, Ovronnaz, Saillon and the thermal pool at Thonon-les-Bains start a little lower, at 32 or 33 °C. For hotter water there's the caldarium at Le Monêtier at 38 to 42 °C, the hot bath at Samedan at 40 °C, Brigerbad's grotto at 40 to 41 °C and a fresh-water pool of 38 to 40 °C at the RupertusTherme. The Gastein baths range more widely, 24 to 34 °C at the Felsentherme and 24 to 37 °C at the Alpentherme.
Do you need to book Alpine thermal baths in advance?
At Therme Vals, yes: day visitors must book an entry slot online in advance. Les Grands Bains du Monêtier strongly advises booking online to guarantee entry, and Das Ronacher in Bad Kleinkirchheim recommends reserving a spa day at least two days ahead by phone or email. The Spa Thermal d'Uriage sells fixed two-hour slots and advises booking because places are limited, while Thonon-les-Bains needs no booking. Mineralbad Samedan takes no reservations, so there can be a wait when it gets busy. Vals, Samedan and Le Monêtier ban phones: throughout at Vals and Samedan, and in the Grands Bains at Le Monêtier.
Which Alpine thermal baths admit no children?
QC Terme's Alpine baths admit nobody under 14: Bagni Vecchi and Bagni Nuovi in Bormio, Pré-Saint-Didier in the Aosta Valley and QC Terme Dolomiti in Pozza di Fassa, and Bagni Nuovi, Pré-Saint-Didier and QC Terme Dolomiti turn away pregnant women too. At Les Bains du Mont Blanc in Saint-Gervais, children of 3 to 12 come only to two-hour family sessions, and adult sessions are from 13. Thonon-les-Bains admits nobody under 16, and the Spa Thermal d'Uriage is for over-16s, who the operator says must come with at least one parent. Thermes Chevalley in Aix-les-Bains is from 12, except on family Wednesdays from age 3, and the Spa Õ des Lauzes at La Léchère is from 14, with under-18s accompanied by an adult.
