About Terme Merano
The building is a cube of glass and steel with wooden accents, designed by Matteo Thun and opened in 2005. Its water starts as rain in the granite of the Vigiljoch, which the baths say loads it with radon, fluorine and rare metals before a 1,200 m gallery carries it out of the mountain. In the indoor pools music plays under the water, and you only hear it once your head goes under. In summer the park opens with a natural swimming pond cleaned through lime-gravel filters instead of chlorine, and the lily pond beside it is home to abandoned pet turtles brought in by the Sill animal shelter in Bolzano.
