Thermal baths in Tuscany
Also spelled Toscana
Tuscany's hot springs run from Grotta Giusti at Monsummano Terme in the north, through the province of Siena at Rapolano Terme, Chianciano Terme, San Casciano dei Bagni and the Val d'Orcia villages of Bagno Vignoni and Bagni San Filippo, to Saturnia and Sorano in the Maremma. The water leaves the ground at 34 °C at Grotta Giusti and up to 48 °C at Bagni San Filippo, and it's sulphurous at Saturnia, Rapolano and San Casciano. Cascate del Mulino and Bagni San Filippo cost nothing to bathe in, the square pool at Bagno Vignoni is closed to bathers, and several of the paid baths want a swim cap.

Questions about Tuscany
Can you bathe in the square at Bagno Vignoni?
No. The medieval square pool and the old mill basins below the village are closed to bathers. Day visitors use the three outdoor thermal pools at La Posta, which run from 35 to 38 °C in the first down to 28 to 32 °C in the last. A swim cap is required, and La Posta admits guests from 14.
Which Tuscan hot springs are free to bathe in?
Cascate del Mulino below Saturnia and the pools at Bagni San Filippo, with no ticket at either. At Cascate del Mulino sulphurous water at 37.5 °C runs down travertine pools beside an old mill, open at all hours with no gate, while the paid Terme di Saturnia park next door includes the natural spring pool only on its Club ticket. At Bagni San Filippo the pools lie beside the Fosso Bianco stream, about five minutes on foot down a white road at the village entrance, and you mustn't touch, climb or bathe beside the Balena Bianca.
Do you need a swim cap at Tuscan thermal baths?
At several of them, yes. Caps are compulsory at La Posta in Bagno Vignoni, where they're sold on site, at Grotta Giusti, at Terme di Sorano and at Theia in Chianciano Terme, which also wants a swimsuit and slippers. Terme di Saturnia asks for swimwear and pool slippers everywhere, with white towels and bathrobes only. Terme di Sorano also needs booking by phone, email or WhatsApp.
How hot are the pools at the Tuscan thermal baths?
Mostly between the low 30s and 40 °C. Antica Querciolaia in Rapolano Terme keeps warm baths at 39 to 40 °C and temperate baths at 30 to 34 °C, and Terme San Giovanni nearby runs from about 27 to 36 °C. Fonteverde's thermal pool at San Casciano dei Bagni is about 38 °C, Theia's pools in Chianciano Terme 33 to 36 °C and the main pool at Terme di Sorano about 36 °C. Grotta Giusti's outdoor pool is 34 °C, and the lake at the end of its cave 36 °C.
