Bagni San Filippo

Water leaves the spring at 48 °C on the slopes of Monte Amiata and has built white limestone formations in the woods, the largest known as the Balena Bianca, the White Whale. People have bathed here since Roman times, the pools lie along the path beside the Fosso Bianco stream, and entry is free.

About Bagni San Filippo

The Medici came for the water: Cosimo I had the baths restored in 1566, and Grand Duke Ferdinando II restored them again in the 17th century. In the 18th century the Chianciano architect Leonardo De Vegni promoted the "plastica dei tartari" here, a technique that turned the springs' own lime deposits into ornamental reliefs. In winter, when rain mixes with the thermal water, its path to the Balena Bianca shifts and the colours change. On the road down from Campiglia d'Orcia, the Grotta di San Filippo Benizi is cut into a block of limestone, where the Servite friar is said to have hidden in 1267 to escape being elected pope.
