About Terme di Saturnia
The operator traces the water to rain on the slopes of Monte Amiata, which it says travels underground for 40 years before it rises in the spring pool. The Romans called it Aquae Sanctae, and a papal bull of 1188 from Clement III, kept in the State Archives of Siena, already records a hospice and a mill at the bath. The Ciacci family bought the baths in 1865, and Gaspero Ciacci built the hotel in 1919, the year the resort's 1919 Restaurant is named after; it overlooks the spring. Legend says Saturn, tired of men forever at war, hurled lightning at the earth and the hot water burst out.
