Thermal baths in Finland

In Finland the sauna is part of everyday life, and Finnish sauna culture has been on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage since 2020. Public saunas once served city neighbourhoods where homes had none; a newer generation of shore saunas pairs the heat with a dip in the sea or a lake all year round.

Questions about Finland

Do you wear swimwear in a Finnish public sauna?

It depends on the sauna. At Löyly the saunas are mixed and swimwear stays on throughout. Kotiharju and Rajaportti have separate men's and women's saunas, though Rajaportti holds a mixed sauna on some Thursdays with swimwear optional. At Sompasauna it's mixed and clothing is optional in the sauna and in the sea. At Allas swimwear is required in the pools and mixed saunas and optional in the separate women's and men's floating saunas.

Is Sompasauna in Helsinki free?

Yes. Volunteers run it with no staff, and you heat the sauna yourself. There's no running water, shower or changing room, and the lockers need your own padlock. Take bus 81 to Marsalkantie in Kulosaari, or trams 11 and 12 to Korkeasaari, then walk onto Mustikkamaa.

Do you need to book Löyly in Helsinki?

Yes, the public sauna is booked in two-hour slots. Under-18s come with a guardian, and tram 6 to Eiranranta is the nearest stop.

Can you get a scrub at a Helsinki sauna?

Yes, at Kotiharju, where a washer gives full-body scrubs on Thursdays and Saturdays. Its men's stove holds about 1,500 kg of stones and takes up to five hours to heat. Take the metro or trams 1, 6, 7 or 8 to Sörnäinen.
