Tampere lies in the Finnish Lakeland on the strip of land between lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi, about 160 km north-west of Helsinki. Rajaportti, a public sauna run by volunteers, is in Pispala on the ridge west of the centre, while Kaupinoja and Rauhaniemi sit on the Näsijärvi shore, where a hole is kept open in the lake ice all winter.
