Questions about Norway
Do you wear swimwear in Norway's public saunas?
Yes, at regular sessions. KOK in Oslo, Heit in Bergen, Havet in Trondheim and Pust in Oslo, Sandvika, Tromsø, Bodø and Sortland all require swimwear, and Stu in Trondheim, Svai in Ålesund and Fauna Sauna in Bodø ask you to bring it. Oslo Badstuforening and Laugaren in Bergen keep swimwear for regular sessions and run naked or textile-free sessions at set times, Fauna Sauna holds a nude session on Tuesday evenings, and Blaud in Kristiansand runs some clothing-optional sessions on request.
Where are the floating saunas in Oslo?
KOK's wood-fired saunas are moored at Langkaia opposite the Opera House, with four more on a pier at Aker Brygge. Oslo Badstuforening's sauna village is at Sukkerbiten beside the Munch museum, with saunas from four seats to 25. Just outside the city, Pust has a floating sauna at Kadettangen in Sandvika, about 10 minutes' drive away, with a silent lookout sauna at the end of the jetty.
Do you need to book a sauna in Oslo or Bergen?
Mostly, yes. KOK and Oslo Badstuforening sell 90-minute sessions ahead; KOK takes drop-ins only when seats are left, and Badstuforening tickets go on sale 21 days before. Heit in Bergen is booking only, in 50-minute shared sessions.
Is there a public sauna in Tromsø?
Yes: Pust has three saunas floating in Tromsø's inner harbor at Skippergata, facing Tromsdalstinden, including the round Lavvo sauna inspired by the Sami lavvo. All three have steps into the sea, and swimwear stays on.
Where are the saunas in Trondheim?
In the harbor, a short walk from the center. Havet runs ARK, a floating village of seven saunas with a sea pool at Nyhavna, beside Árdna on the quay, and a 2.5-hour session covers all open shared saunas; the Strandveikaia bus stop is a minute away. Stu Brattøra has two floating sauna rooms in Brattørbassenget, booked online only, where drop-in seats share a two-hour slot.
Are Norway's harbor saunas staffed?
Some aren't. Blaud in Kristiansand sends a PIN code by text message, and Pust in Bodø, Stu in Trondheim and Svai in Ålesund are self-service too. At KOK in Oslo a sauna master on the quay feeds the stove, at Laugaren in Bergen a volunteer sauna master hosts every session, and at Fauna Sauna in Bodø a sauna master is always on site.
Where can you take a sauna in Bodø?
At Pust in the inner harbor and at Fauna Sauna on the shore. Pust's unstaffed sauna seats 14, with steps into the sea, and you book a seat by the hour. Fauna Sauna, run by the non-profit Nordnorsk Badstuforening, has two wood-fired saunas and a bathing platform over the sea, and a greenhouse opposite the changing room serves coffee.
