Questions about North Iceland
Can you reach the North Iceland hot pools without a car?
Forest Lagoon, yes: a free shuttle leaves Centrum Kitchen & Bar in Akureyri every evening. For Earth Lagoon Mývatn, Strætó route 56 from Akureyri stops in Reykjahlíð village, about 3 km from the lagoon, with no service on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For Fosslaug, route 57 stops in Varmahlíð, about 7 km from the pool, with no bus to the waterfall; the path starts at a signed car park off roads 752 and 753 near Vindheimamelar. GeoSea has a car park at the baths.
What are the age rules at the North Iceland lagoons?
All three lagoons take children, with limits. Forest Lagoon admits no under-12s after 20:00, and under-16s need a guardian aged 18 or over. At GeoSea children up to 15 must be with an adult guardian and 2 to 8-year-olds wear inflatable armbands, free at the baths; the pools are 90 to 120 cm deep and the water is cloudy. Earth Lagoon Mývatn welcomes all children, and only its Earth Exclusive package is 20 and over.
Do Earth Lagoon Mývatn and GeoSea use chlorine?
No. At Mývatn, water from the Bjarnarflag borehole arrives at about 130 °C and is cooled to 36 to 40 °C with no chlorine. At GeoSea, hot seawater from two drillholes on Húsavíkurhöfði runs through the pools and over their edges into the sea, so no cleaning agents are used.
