About Terme di Roma Acque Albule

Albule comes from the Latin for whitish: as the pressure drops at the surface, the dissolved carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide escape and turn the water milky. The operator quotes Pliny the Elder on wounded soldiers brought here to heal, and says Augustus, who is said to have had gout, had Agrippa build a bath house here whose massive ruins can still be seen. Cardinal Ippolito d'Este came for the water too, and built the Villa d'Este up on the hill to get away from the marshy ground around the springs. The historic Anderloni building and the old pool grounds were restored in 2002.
