Expect the sea at about 25 °C in July and 16 °C in January, going by the 1991 to 2020 averages. The swimming season runs from May to November.

- Plakias is on the south coast, 40 km south of Rethymno, and the beach runs along the bay in front of the village. The Region of Crete describes it as an organised beach with water sports.
- Public transport
- KTEL Chania-Rethymno runs Rethymno to Plakias buses five times a day on weekdays and four at weekends, and a Plakias to Preveli service twice a day (timetable valid from 28 September 2026).
