Thermal baths in Latvia
In the 19th century every Latvian farmstead had its own pirts, a bathhouse where water poured over hot stones makes a humid steam. Bathers are swatted with switches of birch, oak, linden or juniper, which bath masters mix with other plants for their scent, and then cool down fast in a cold pond, a pool or a shower. Body scrubs and clay or honey masks are often part of the ritual.
