Terme della Ficoncella

The Terme della Ficoncella are five open-air pools of naturally hot sulfurous water on a limestone hill 4 km from Civitavecchia, run for the comune by its company Civitavecchia Servizi Pubblici. Known since Roman times as an alternative to the nearby Terme Taurine, the pools range from 30 to 56 °C.

About Terme della Ficoncella

The name comes from a large fig tree that shades the site, and an old local saying runs "Se te voi guarì al ficoncio a da veni'": if you want to get well, come to the fig. The comune describes the water as clear and colourless with a slightly bitter taste, and says that although it is sulfurous it gives off no sharp smell. Steam comes out of a grotto at the entrance to the pools, which the comune says is used for inhalation. Local tradition holds that the emperor Trajan bathed in the same water.
