About Thermes de Luchon
The Romans dug the first thermal pools here and named the place Ilixon, after Ilixo, a god of springs. The baron d'Étigny, the royal intendant, visited in 1759, built a bathhouse and laid out the avenue that still carries his name to link the springs with the town. The main building, by the architect Edmond Chambert, opened on 20 July 1857, and ten years later Napoleon III's son, the Prince Impérial, was treated here in a small wooden building kept for him. Today the water comes from three boreholes 170 to 730 m deep, and carbon dating puts its age at 14,000 to 18,000 years.
