Thermal baths in Estonia
The sauna is part of Estonian life, and the smoke sauna tradition of Võromaa in the south-east is on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. In Tallinn, public saunas range from neighbourhood bathhouses with separate sides for men and women to sauna centres with pools and a wood-fired sauna on the seafront, where you cool off in the sea.

Questions about Estonia
Are the saunas at Kalma Saun in Tallinn mixed?
No, men and women have separate public saunas. The men's side has a wood-fired stove, a swimming pool and a steam room; the women's side has electric heaters and a small plunge pool.
How do you get to Kalma Saun in Tallinn?
Take bus 3 to Kalamaja, or trams 1, 2, 5 or 6 to Balti jaam.
Is there an adults-only sauna area in Tallinn?
Yes: the Spa21+ area at Elamus Spa in Mustamäe is for 18 and over, with nine saunas of its own and access to the rest of the centre. The family area is shared with children, and children from 13 may visit on their own.
Where can you try a smoke sauna in Estonia?
At Mooska farm in Haanja, in Võromaa, the family runs guided smoke-sauna sessions of two to three hours for one group at a time, booked ahead. Everyone goes in together and naked, and you cool off in the pond, or an ice hole in winter. In Pärnu the ESTONIA Resort Hotel & Spa has a traditional Estonian smoke sauna on its outdoor terrace, where swimsuits are compulsory.
Do you wear swimwear in Estonian saunas?
In most spa hotels and water parks, yes: the ESTONIA Resort and Hedon in Pärnu, the Georg Ots Spa Hotel in Kuressaare, the Värska water center and the Kalev Spa water park in Tallinn all require it. A few places go without. Mooska farm in Haanja bathes naked, the Georg Ots Spa Hotel in Kuressaare has a mixed nude sauna called Sven for over-18s, and at Logi saun in Tallinn swimwear is optional if you wrap a towel around you. Tervis in Pärnu recommends using the saunas in its changing rooms without swimwear.
Can you visit the Pärnu spa hotels without staying there?
Yes. The ESTONIA Resort sells three-hour visits without booking and Tervis Medical Spa three-hour tickets to its sauna and water center. Hedon's Silent Spa is a three-hour guided ritual for over-16s, with at most 12 women and 12 men at a time, booked online, by email or by phone.
From what age can children go to Estonian spas?
It varies. Kalev Spa's Sauna Oasis in Tallinn is for over-18s and Hedon's Silent Spa in Pärnu for over-16s. At Tervis in Pärnu children from 15 may come alone, and at the Värska water center and Elamus Spa in Tallinn from 13; younger children need an adult. At Anne Saun in Tartu, children from 7 use the men's or women's side by sex.
How do you get to the Värska spa without a car?
Take a bus via Tartu to the stop Värska sanatoorium. There's also a train from Tartu to Orava twice a day, and the spa runs a transfer from Orava station if you book it at least three working days ahead.
