About Balneario de Baños de Montemayor

Roman soldiers and officials, and the Hispano-Roman people around them, bathed in these sulphurous springs between the 1st and 4th centuries. From the 17th to the 19th century several bishops helped improve the baths, enlarging them and adding more basins. The spa's first medical director, Francisco Martínez Serrano, studied the water in 1819 and proposed reforms, and in 1833 the town council handed the baths to the residents, whose board still exists today as Probaños. A new building opened in 1995, the year the balneario was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural, and the old building over the Roman bath was refurbished in 2000.
