Thermal baths in Lithuania
The Lithuanian pirtis is a slow steam bath: humid heat of around 60 °C, several rounds in the steam room, scrubs of salt, honey or clay, and whisking with bundles of birch or oak twigs called vanta, often by a bath master. Mineral springs turned towns on the Nemunas river into spa resorts, and the one at Birštonas has served its bromine-rich water to visitors since 1846.
