About Kilcullen's Seaweed Baths
The family bought the site in 1898 and called their bathhouse "Kilcullen's Modern Bath House" to set it apart from an older bathhouse in the village from the mid-1800s. The founder was a former chauffeur at Liss Ard House in County Cork, by his grandson Edward's account a man fascinated by steam and all things mechanical. Edward's son Cain, a former pro surfer, harvests wild serrated wrack from the mid-shore at low tide, as much as a quarter of a tonne in a day. Each load gets a jet of steam to release its alginates before it goes into the heated seawater, which turns the bath amber.
