Theresienbad

The Theresienbad stands on a sulphur spring the Romans already knew, rediscovered in 1755; the city reopened it in 1902 on mains water and rebuilt it from 1952, adding the swimming hall in 1965. The City of Vienna's history wiki calls it Vienna's oldest spa, and the sauna has separate women's and men's sections with a Finnish sauna, a bio sauna, a steam bath and warm and cold plunge pools.

About Theresienbad

Before it was a bath house, the building was a hunting lodge of Joseph I, where Maria Theresa set up a wool factory in 1766; when the factory moved to Linz it became a bath house, rebuilt and enlarged in 1822 to take in the Meidling theatre of 1806. A nymph altar found here is now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum and appears on Meidling's district coat of arms. Air raids in 1944 and 1945 destroyed the bath house of 1910 and the summer pool, and the bath reopened in makeshift form on 20 May 1945. Carry Hauser's ceramic murals of bathers from 1964 hang in the swimming hall.
